The flu had me down for a week.

It has been a crazy last couple of weeks around the Fernandez household.  First I was working a ton, two 16 hour shifts in a row and then an 8 hour shift.  I took care of patients with the flu (and I didn't know they had it at the time), Scabies (came home a showered), patients who spit their pills in my face while restrained and still managing to nearly kick me in the face with their feet, let me tell you, it was interesting.  I felt good, not too tired after all those shifts, had a few days off with my love and life was good.

We had waffles for dinner, sat and snuggled on the couch.  I made this AMAZING tomato soup and tried on some new scrubs hoping the small would fit me.  No such luck, they make the shoulders so small, it's quite a bummer because it fits so much better around the waist.  Oh well, not like I need to look good while I work or anything. :)

I went to Salem for Christmas, though Paul had to stay home because he worked the 24th till 10pm and had to work at 7am on the 26th.  We kept in touch through texting and were able to hang out the 27-28 and have a wonderful time together. :)  While in Salem I got to hang out with my awesome cousins and hold my second cousin for hours.  I wish they lived closer than San Francisco (they may be moving to Portland soon!).

That picture of me tired was during one of my 16 hour shifts, by the end you are just kinda blah, and pray your patients behave and nothing crazy happens!   I did see the most awesome of Sunrises though.  I stood there and watched it with one of my patients for nearly 5 minutes.  Ironically he was the patient that days before was trying to kick me in the face, but he was better that day and we watched the sunrise and enjoyed each others company.  What a difference a few days makes.

I miss my little bro, it was good to see him at Christmas even if we were staying at different houses.  Oh, and I love his new shirt!

Eric is a heating pad snatcher.  I got up for not more than 3 minutes and when I came back he was camped out on my spot!  The little girl to the top right is Gabe's niece.  We hung out one day after I had picked up just 4 hours of work.  She told me she was  going to draw "her princess" and I told her to do it and she said "but I already did, see".  According to Gabe it was the first time she has drawn a stick figure, she isn't quite 3 if I remember correctly, she is a total sweetheart.

Over Christmas my friend Sara (she was the maid of honor in my wedding) got engaged!  She has been wanting this for a long time, but wasn't sure it was going to happen because her man kept wanting to wait till he was more financially stable.  She will be getting married this summer on Mt. Rainier with just a few people at her side (I may or may not be there because I don't know if my knee can handle a long hike up Mt. Rainier!) and then she will be having a reception in Moses Lake in July or August. :)

Since Paul wasn't able to be with my family on Christmas I texted him a picture of his presents. He pretty much got the hook up with awesome presents and a stocking even though he wasn't there!

So after I spilled 1.5 gallons of paint all over the garage floor and Paul's motorcycle we decided to take out the plastic garage floor.  I miss it, but was so glad I hadn't spilled paint permanently all over the concrete.  We tore it out, and ran around like crazy fools trying to get everything done before the dump closed at 4:30, we made it- thanks to God for making EVERY single light on our way there green!

Paul got all of his old childhood toys from his parents house.  He has tons of toy cars (Shea should come visit again!), toy trains, Sesame Street figures, more toy story figures, and a bunch of cool stuff.  I sorted it all and now I just need to make labels for it.  It's current home is on the top shelf of the closet in the guest room, works for me!

Sunday I woke up with what I thought was a chest cold.  Paul's boss is on vacation this week so he had Sunday off (he had the managers schedule).  We got up and went to church and I could barely pay attention.  I was so tired and freezing cold.  We came home, I napped, and we made chex mix.  Then we went to Paul's parents for the Seahawks game, I still thought I had a chest cold.  I was still freezing cold and spent most of the game laying on the couch.  I lost my appetite and Paul's mom said I looked night and day different from the time I arrived to the time we were leaving.  The picture to the top right was when whe got home, I went straight upstairs to change, then napped on the couch while Paul watched tv.  He bumped up the house heat to 70 for me (felt amazing!) and then I took my temp, 102.2, no wonder I felt like crap!  The next morning I felt worse, I had a temp all night (except when I broke it with tylenol but it came right back), so Paul's mom took me to the Urgent care so I could get some tamiflu (slows down the multiplication process of the virus so your immune system can attack it better).  We got me some gatorade, meds, and I spent the whole day napping away the fever. I had a fever for 4 days!  I kept up on tylenol (something I never do) because every time the fever came back I felt like someone was pushing on my head from all directions.

My kitties napped with me all day long for days on end, I was so happy when my temp broke (again because of tylenol not for real) that I texted a picture to my mom.  Once I felt a tiny bit better (thank you meds!) I organized my side table so everything would fit.  I always had gatorade and water at my side.  The Dr. wrote me a note to be off work all week (4 work days) and I didn't know if I would take him up on his offer.  I definitely did.  This would have been my last day at work today before vacation (we leave for Maui in the morning) but I didn't feel I had enough energy (and I still have a wet cough) to go to work, so I called in sick, emailed my manager, and chilled at home.

Yesterday I did go out and do a few errands.  One hour of a mani/pedi and then I returned things to a few stores.  That two hours out of the house meant I had to nap for hours, my energy level still so low!

The picture of Paul's wallet was because he couldn't find it in the morning before work on friday and I was freaking out.  "you can't have lost your wallet the friday before we leave on vacation, you need to go to the DOL on your lunch break!".  Turns out it was on the bedside table...yeah, we must have been blind (and I was half asleep) while we were looking for it at 6am.

So there you have it. First I worked a ton, then I was sick for a week.  I have loved reading your girls posts this week!

I have spent all day  ( a few hours) vacuuming, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, cleaning out the fridge, taking out trashes, and last minute packing for our vacation tomorrow.  I think I will watch tv the rest of the day till Paul gets home.  I am so glad I called into work today, it just didn't seem worth it to wear myself out for one day before vacation, because no matter how much work and running around I do at the house, it is nothing compared to taking care of people at the hospital.

Over and out.

  1. So sad you got the flu! MAN you nurses put up with a lot. Not only crazy long shifts, but crazy patients haha. I love how you were able to enjoy sunsets and sound so positive about your work days though! I'm glad you were able to stay home and rest and get better before your trip. I enjoyed reading up on what you have been up to lately, and I hope you two have an amazing time in Maui!

  2. You deserve a vacation! I'm glad you're feeling better before you go, that sucks so much to be sick like that. I got sick too after the holidays, but thankfully it didn't get too bad. I think your sunset picture was my favorite, I often look at the sky when I get a chance at work because it is the most beautiful thing around (I work in an industrial area and all the trees are bare for winter), just looking up at the sky makes me feel so peaceful. I'm glad you had a positive experience with your difficult patient. Can't wait to see pictures of Maui!
